Press Complaints Commission Outline Proposals For Change

The Press Complaints Commission has announced a set of proposals for changes to the industry’s Code of Practice. Announcing the plans Lord Wakeham, chairman of the PCC, said that he had been particularly impressed by the radicalism of tabloid editors who had shown a “sincere determination to respond swiftly to changed circumstances.”

The new proposals, which will be considered and implemented by the newspaper industry’s Code of Practice Committee, include:

  • a prohibition on the publication of any pictures obtained through ‘persistent pursuit’ or as a result of ‘unlawful behaviour.’
  • new measures to tackle media ‘scrums’ and collective harassment.
  • measures to increase significantly the protection of children.
  • the establishment of a new and tougher ‘overriding’ public interest defence.
  • new protection for those in grief or shock.
