News Corporation has announced financial figures for the first quarter of 1997 which show that pre-tax profits have risen 38% year on year to $291m. Revenue was up 27% to $2.9 bn. The group’s UK newspaper businesses performed well, with advertising gains, increased circulation revenues and lower paper prices contributing to “significantly improved” margins against last year.
