Public Show Vote Of Confidence In ASA
72% of consumers believe that the Advertising Standards Authority provides the most effective way of regulating advertising, according to the results of an independent survey announced today.
The majority of consumers are confident that the Authority makes considered decisions, is in tune with public opinion and generally gets the balance right. The survey also shows that the ASA has consolidated its position as the best known regulator.
When informed about the independent status of the ASA, only 14% thought they would prefer a government body to regulate advertising: 76% considered the current system to be the most sensible way of dealing with advertising complaints.
The Authority’s director general, Matti Alderson, said: “The ASA recognises that its effectiveness as a regulator is directly linked to the public’s awareness of its work…These figures confirm that government intervention would be out of step with public opinion.”
