Publishers Welcome Self Regulation

The Newspaper Society has issued a statement welcoming the Government’s announcement on Press and Privacy. They highlight the support for the Press Complaints Commission, the rejection of statutory press controls, and the decisin not to introduce a new tort of privacy, nor new criminal offences of intrusion.

Commenting on the Government’s response, the Society’s deputy director, David Newell said: ” The Press Complaints Commission and the industry can now get on with the job of making self regulation work, without the threat of control of a government agency.”
