In an average month during the first quarter of 2010, 63.7% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile devices, according to new figures from comScore.

This was a 0.6 percentage point increase on the fourth quarter of 2009.

Browsers were used by 30.1% of US mobile subscribers (up 2.6 percentage points), while subscribers who used downloaded applications made up 28.6% of the mobile audience (up 2.6 percentage points), said comScore.

Last week, ABI Research data revealed that consumers downloaded 2.4 billion smartphone applications from app stores in 2009, with the download rate expected to accelerate over the next few years, until peaking at just below seven billion in 2013.

Access of social networking sites or blogs continued to increase in Q1, said comScore, posting gains of 2.8 percentage points to 18.7% of mobile subscribers.
