Q2 1998 RAJAR Summary – Commercial Radio Pulls Away From BBC

RAJAR figures for Q2 1998, released this afternoon, show that commercial radio has increased its lead over the BBC stations taking a 51.1% share of total radio listening. Overall radio weekly reach is down very slightly by 0.2% to 40.29 million. Average hours per listener increased by 2.0% from 20.3 in Q2 1997 to 20.7 this time. Total hours also grew by 2.0% to 834 million.

The BBC stations suffered an overall loss of listening share, down 0.6% points to 46.8%. Both the BBC’s and Commercial’s share of weekly reach remained unchanged year on year.

Weekly reach for Radio 1 was down by 3.2% to 9.4 million listeners; Virgin AM gained 16.2% to 3.4 million.
