Carat Research has released its latest research into the quality of television viewing, which showed that 26% of ITV adult viewers pay little or no attention to the programmes they watch. However, of those that are “really watching”, 59% enjoy what they watch.

The most enjoyed programmes on ITV include Heartbeat, London’s Burning, Soldier Soldier, Michael Winners’ True Crime and The Krypton Factor, with the least enjoyed shows of the Autumn being The Upper Hand and Lose A Million which were enjoyed by only 30% of its viewers. The Hypnotic World of Paul Mckenna had one of the most attentive audiences…

Channel 4 has overtaken ITV in terms of overall viewer satisfaction with high scores for Cheers, Desmond’s, Roseanne and Fifteen to One. GMTV fares better than TV AM, being enjoyed by 56% of its audience compared to 43% for TV AM, although the proportion of viewers paying little or no attention has risen from 25% for TV AM to 38% of the GMTV audience.

In terms of satellite, the most involving station is Discovery. Satellite stations overall have less attentive audiences than ITV and C4, especially the music channels. UK Gold and the music channels are most enjoyed however.
