QVC Launches Interactive Shopping Service

Television shopping channel QVC is to launch an interactive service next year in an attempt to fight off competition from its new rival Open. Customers will be able to view and buy goods in real time instead of waiting for a product to be advertised.
The service, to be called QVC Directory, will be available next year and will initially offer customers an interactive catalogue which allows them to browse through products on their television screen. This will be followed by an interactive ordering device allowing viewers to order products using their remote control.
Mark Suckle, chief executive officer of QVC UK, commented: “This new development in digital television will enable our customers to see an item, choose it and buy it using their remote control while watching live QVC programmes. It will allow QVC to offer our customers a revolutionary new way to interact with a television programme. This technology has important ramifications, not only for home shopping, but also for other broadcast content.”
The service will only be available to Sky Digital subscribers. BSkyB, which owns a 20% stake in QVC, is also a shareholder in Open, the home shopping service which launched earlier this year (see Interactive TV Launches In The UK).
