RA Awards First Digital Radio Multiplex To Emap/Capital Consortium
The Radio Authority has awarded the local digital radio multiplex for the Birmingham area to CE Digital. CE Digital is the 50:50 digital radio venture created by Emap and Capital Radio, and was the sole bidder for the licence (see Newsline). This is the first local digital multiplex to be awarded by the RA.
Capital and EMAP are planning to launch the Birmingham digital broadcast in May 2000 and will offer three Capital formats (BRMB, Capital Gold and Xfm), one EMAP station (Magic) as well as one Asian and one dance programme.
CE Digital was also the sole applicant for the Manchester digital radio multiplex (see Newsline), but the licence for London is being contested, with Switch Digital, a consortium including Talk Radio, Virgin Radio and Clear Channel, submitting an application (see Newsline).
Chrysalis and Border are also expected to submit a joint bid for the London digital licence in the near future.
