RA Carries Out Public Interest Tests

RA Carries Out Public Interest Tests

The Radio Authority will be carrying out a public interest test with regards to the proposed acquisition of Leicester Sound by DMG Radio, a subsidiary of Daily Mail General Trust plc *GWR And Classic In £215m Merger.

The Authority is inviting comments from interested parties and the public which, when a newspaper group proposes control of a local radio licence, are a requirement of the Broadcasting Act 1996. As part of this the watchdog will examine the “desirability” of promoting plurality in ownership in the broadcasting and newspaper industries; diversity of sources of information and opinions expressed to the public; and any economic benefits which are the result of DMGT being a newspaper group.

…A similar public interest test will also be carried out by the Authority with regards to the Independent Radio Group’s proposed ownership of 96.3 QFM. This is due to the fact that IRG already owns Scot FM and, under the new ownership rules, a company cannot hold two FM licences in the same area without such a test taking place. For the same reasons both Capital Radio’s and London News Radio’s applications to run the new Greater London FM licence will be subject to a public interest test.
