RA Receives 13 Scotland Licence Applications

The Radio Authority (RA) has received 13 submissions for the independent local radio (ILR) licence in Central Scotland which covers both Glasgow and Edinburgh. The following groups submitted service proposals by the deadline on Tuesday:

  • Asian Sound Scotland (Shujat Ali, 0161 288 1000): a lively and professional service of music, entertainment, news and information for the Asian population of Central Scotland.
  • Beat FM (Ron McCulloch, 0141 331 7600): a music-intensive station which will be loud, hot and new; it will ‘be there’ for young Scots with a fresh, dynamic mix of new rock, dance and information that matters – the best entertainment guide, and short, relevant features – all wrapped up with fast, stylish presentation.
  • The Edge (Darragh Leeson, 0141 333 0557): to serve 15-29 year olds playing alternative hits and new music with a passion for the music, our listeners and Scotland.
  • EGFM (William Burdett-Coutts, 0131 555 5105): young Scotland’s radio station, providing a sharp and stylish mix of dance and indie music with targeted news, event listings and interactive features.
  • Ez FM (John Boyle, 01505 702 151): a station for the over-35s in Central Scotland which will broadcast an unrivalled variety of easy listening music from the 60s to the 90s, supplemented by exciting and relevant daily lifestyle features and a succinct, locally generated, 24-hour regional news and information service.
  • FM8 (Kris Burford, 01942 777 666): a youth orientated radio station broadcasting a mix of contemporary dance music and intelligent speech to a core demographic of 15-29 year olds.
  • Capital Fun Radio (Richard Park, 0171 766 6106): a music-led, interactive service, targeting children aged 4-14 and their young parents, featuring new fun music, with news, information and features designed to entertain its audience.
  • The Hub (Alan McGee, 0171 586 2294): the alternative contemporary music station for Central Scotland targeted at 15-34 year olds.
  • Jazz FM (Richard Wheatly, 0171 429 6366): a station playing the greatest jazz in the world, classic contemporary soul, and the best blues and r’n’b.
  • Kick FM (Robert Noakes, 0141 429 6366): ‘the adult music mix that kicks’, drawn from the complementary strands of modern adult and Celtic popular music.
  • The Point (Tessa Hartman, 01236 826 555): a radio service to capture the spirit of new Scotland, providing a mix of dance and alternative music together with news, information and entertainment specially designed for 15 to 34 year olds.
  • Revival Radio (Ian Dunlop, 01236 734 447): delivering relevant, life-enhancing Christian message which enriches the people of Central Scotland.
  • Scottish News Radio (Nigel Reeve, 0171 312 8500): the first commercial 24-hour news and newstalk station for Central Scotland, providing a mix of regional, national and international news, travel, finance, sports, entertainment and weather.

The RA expects to announce its decision about the award of the licence ealy next year.
