RAB-Eye Boss Blasts Television Industry

Professor John Naughton, chairman of RAB-Eye, was quietly damning of the TV industry yesterday as he addressed the IPA Measuring Media in the Future Conference in London.

“Old style TV broadcasting has been the dominant beast in the media industry, that dominance is ending, but many, with vested interests, don’t want to accept this.”

This new digital media world is growing, he told the audience, a “pull world”, where consumers want more control and are agnostic about the devices they use to receive their media. “A new kind of media industry is needed”, said Naughton, made up of people who see this change as “liberating, and as an opportunity.”

“At senior levels, particularly in TV, the media industry does not have people who understand this”. Younger people in the industry – who may or may not get the chance to exercise power, do understand, Naughton contended. “Radio people get it more than TV people.”
