Radio 1 Audiences Up On Last Quarter – BBC Round-Up

The BBC has claimed great success for Radio 1 in the latest Rajar data, for Q2 1995. Its total audience (4+) rose by 600,000 to 12.9 million compared to the first quarter of 1995. Chris Evan’s has had the desired affect on the Breakfast Show, with audiences up by 10% from 6.19m to 6.8m (4+).
Its audience among adults has increased from 10.5 million last quarter to 11.068 million this time, a reach up from 22% to 23% – however, compared to last year’s Q2 figure, 12.3 million, Radio 1 has lost a further million listeners. Radio 1’s audience share, this quarter 11.7%, is up on last quarter’s 10.8%, but down significantly on last year’s 13.3%.
Compared to last year’s Q2 figures, Radio 5 Live has fared better than other BBC stations, increasing weekly reach from 4.2m to 4.9m, and increasing its share of listening from 2.1% last year to 2.9% this year. However, compared to last quarter it has dropped audience – its weekly reach in Q1 was over 5m; this poorer performance is explained by the lack of football in this period, according to the BBC. Radio 3 and Radio 4 both had a stable quarter; Radio 3 maintained its 5% weekly reach, and Radio 4 maintained its 18% weekly reach, compared to last year. Compared to the previous quarter, both stations have increased their share of listening; Radio 3 is up by 0.1% point, and Radio 4 is up by 0.6% points.
Radio 2, still the most listened to station with 12% of audience share, lost 548,000 listeners compared to last year, with its weekly reach down from 19% to 18%. It also lost audience compared to last quarter, down 274,000.
BBC’s local and regional licences lost 388,000 listeners on the year, with weekly reach down to 20% from 21%. Their share of listening was 9.8%, down from 10.6% share last year.
