Radio 1 Controller Resigns
Johnny Beerling, Controller of Radio 1 for 8 years, has resigned from the station to make way for “someone fresh” to take over. The station is under pressure from national commercial station, Virgin 1215 which launched in April and could soon take up an FM slot, putting even greater strain on the BBC station. Audiences for One FM have dropped by eight million since it hit its peak in the 1970s when it claimed a listenership of 27 million.
Shareholder in Cornwall Independent Radio Ltd, Allied Radio Plc, has sold its 20% stake in the radio company. CIR Ltd operate Cornwall based station, Pirate FM.
