Radio 3 Responds To Classic FM

Radio 3 is to start broadcasting for 24 hours a day from May 4 as part of its response to competition from the 24-hour Classic FM. The new service, between 1am and 6am, Radio 3 Through the Night, will include European concerts and music supplied by the European Broadcasting Union.

Schools programmes will be removed from Radio 3’s daytime schedules, from June 17 to be broadcast between 3am and 5am for recording; Radio 2’s Jazz Notes will transfer to Radio 3.

Radio 3 has appointed an Editor for Nighttime Broadcasting and a new Head of Presentation.

Nicholas Kenyon, Controller of Radio 3 said, “It is a sign of the commitment of the BBC to Radio 3 and its role as a broadcaster of live and specially recorded music that we’ve been given the resources to launch 24-hour broadcasting.”
