Radio 4 Ready For Change
James Boyle, Controller of BBC Radio 4, spoke of his plans to shake-up the station at a Radio Academy conference last week. Mr Boyle said that he was keen to ensure that Radio 4 programmes retained their freshness. He doesn’t want the station to become stuck in a rut and he wants new producers to try out different ideas within new, and existing, programmes.
According to today’s Guardian, James Boyle said that he, “Will not be held hostage by sectional audience interests resisting change” He has instigated a programme by programme review of the station’s entire schedule.
Radio 4 has about 8.2 million listeners a week and a largely up-market audience, though the latest Rajar figures revealed that the station has experienced a decline in weekly reach of 5.86% – down from 8.715 million in 1995 to 8.204 million in 1996 . Mr Boyle wants to widen the stations appeal to increase it’s younger audience.
