Radio 4’s Schedule On The Boyle

The controller of BBC Radio 4, James Boyle, yesterday had his proposed radical schedule changes accepted by BBC Governors. The agreement was made in Broadcast House on the condition that Radio 4’s position as ‘a unique national institution’ was maintained along with ‘it’s best traditions, culture and values’. Neither the governors, Matthew Bannister or James Boyle thought that Radio 4 should be looking to attract a younger audience, or become ‘less demanding or less rewarding for its established, thoughtful listeners’ – which would appear to be a somwhat differing view from that taken by James Boyle in Radio 4 Ready For Change
A further report looking at the commissioning process and audience attitudes will take place in the autumn.
The confirmed new Radio 4 schedule is expected next week.
