BBC Radio 5 Live launched yesterday at 5.00am, following the precedent set last year by Virgin when it began broadcasting at 12.15pm. The new all-speech service offers 24 hours of news and sport and replaces the youth and sports output previously broadcast by Radio 5.
Radio 5 had been achieving a weekly reach of 9%. The news-based Radio 4 has a weekly reach of 18%.
