Radio Adspend Highest Ever In First Quarter

Commercial radio revenue for the first quarter of 2000 reached £120 million, the highest ever spend for a first quarter. This included an increase of almost 29% from national advertisers, compared to the same period last year.

The figures are the latest to be released by the Radio Advertising Bureau and show total revenue for the year to the end of March reached £481 million, a growth of 11.3% compared to the previous year. National advertising revenue share for the period hit 21.2%.

The increase in revenue has been fuelled largely by the dot.com sector, which is now the fifth-highest spending sector on radio. Increased spend from traditional advertisers has also boosted the figures.

Justin Sampson, managing director of the RAB, said: “The new decade has started very strongly for commercial radio. While the dot.com sector is a clear factor in growth, the increased attention from established advertisers such as Proctor & Gamble and Lever Bros is a trend to watch.”

Commercial radio performed well in the latest RAJAR released last week (see Commercial Radio Makes Gains In Latest RAJAR Report).
