Radio Authority Advertises INR3

The Radio Authority is to advertise the third Independent National Radio licence (INR3) tomorrow.

The service, which will be broadcast on the AM wave band, is expected to cover 90% of the UK population. The INR3 must be at least 51% speech based, to fulfil the requirements of the Broadcasting Act.

The Act also requires that the INR3 service must cater for tastes and interests demonstrably different from the existing licensees, Classic FM and Virgin 1215. No more than 10% will be classical or rock-orientated music. INR3 will occupy 1053 and 1089 kHz, the frequencies currently used by Radio 1, which will be available because of Radio 1’s total transfer to FM.

The closing date for the submission of applications is Tuesday 15 March 1994. The Authority expects to award the licence in June/July 1994. The licence will be awarded to the applicant who submits the highest cash bid and who meets the other requirements.
