Radio Authority Licences First Dab Provider

The Radio Authority has licensed its first Digital Audio Broadcasting multiplex provider, National Transcommunications Ltd (NTL). It has issued a restricted service licence to simulcast a showcase of West Midlands IR stations on both analogue and digital.

NTL is launching its DAB system today at the Sound Broadcasting Equipment Show in Birmingham. The stations involved are 1152 Xtra AM, 96.4 BRMB, Beacon Radio, Choice 102.2, Classic FM, Heart FM, Mercia Classic Gold, Mercia FM, and WABC. At any one time 6 of these stations will be broadcast via the DAB system.

The experimental transmissions will run until the end of the year.
