Radio Authority Receives Applications For Licences

The Radio Authority has received nine applications for the new regional Independent Local Radio licence for the East of England. The applicants for the licence, which will reach around 1.3 million adults in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, are:

  • Anglia Country (Paul Kerriage, 0171 384 1175): country music with local, national and international news as well as traffic, travel and gig guides.
  • Anglia FM (Mike Betton, 01522 549900): country music and local information.
  • Atlantic East (Pete Treglown, 01603 616097): music led for young people with short news and information updates.
  • East FM (Les Graham 01638 667851): aimed at 25-50 year olds featuring a mix of music and speech.
  • Esprit FM (Ian Davies, 01603 772810): adult orientated representing commercial, community and cultural concerns with an equal mix of music and speech.
  • Hot 106 FM (Tony Dewhurst, 01257 475002): music-led contemporary youth format aimed at 15-34 year olds.
  • K-Max (Mike Hughes, 0171 550 5504): music-led featuring dance and indie music aimed at young people.
  • Mellow FM (David Cocks, 01473 830302): music and speech format aimed at 35+ audience.
  • Vibe FM (Rob van Poos, 01702 333711): contemporary dance music station serving people in teens and twenties.

The Authority hopes to be able to announce its decision in the spring.

…The Authority has received one application to run the ILR licence for the Western Isles. Isles FM (Angus Nicolson, 01851 702454) is offering a mixture a speech and music to provide a service to the bilingual English and Gaelic-speaking communities in the Western Isles. Around 15,000 adults will be able to receive the service in Stornoway and surrounding parts of the Isle of Lewis.
