Radio Authority Receives Fewer Complaints In Q3 2002
![]()
The Radio Authority received 96 complaints about programming and advertising on UK commercial radio during the third quarter of 2002, compared with over 100 in the previous quarter, according to its latest Programming And Advertising Review.
Between July and September this year the Authority received 46 complaints regarding programming and 50 concerning advertising and sponsorship. Eight programming complaints were upheld, compared with nine for advertising.
One ‘Yellow Card’ warning was issued by the Authority to Wave 105 FM, for contacting a competitor’s breakfast crew to joke about its RAJAR results. The phone call was later broadcast “as live” on Wave 105 FM without the knowledge of the rival station.
According to the Radio Authority, this broke two corner-stones of the compliance code and resulted in a “poor piece of radio” being aired.
Last month the Radio Authority ruled that broadcasters will have to keep news production local to prevent the creation of centralised news hubs. Following a three-month consultation period, the radio watchdog decided not to lift an industry-wide rule specifying that independent local radio news has to be produced and presented locally (see Radio Authority Tells Broadcasters To Keep News Local).
