Radio Authority Revises Digital Timetable

The Radio Authority has put back the launch of Digital Audio Broadcasting until Spring 1998 in an effort to give the “maximum impact necessary for it to succeed.”

The original launch date was supposed to be later this year but the Authority has adopted what it calls a “slow burn” approach whereby it will advertise the national multiplex licence in Spring 1998, followed closely by multiplexes for major local conurbations.

Speaking at the Commercial Radio Companies Association’s AGM today the Authority’s chief executive, Tony Stoller, said: “There has been a growing view within the radio industry that if DAB is to succeed it will need to achieve the necessary critical mass quickly. With this in mind, the industry has suggested that we should try and advertise the national DAB multiplex as close in time as possible to the advertisement of the major local multiplexes.”
