Radio Ireland “Can Succeed”

Radio Ireland, the national radio station launched in March, has so far received a poor reception from listeners but a report from the Media Bureau says that it can succeed.

After three months on air data from the Radio listenership survey (JNLR) reveals that Radio Ireland achieved a quarter hour listenership level between 7am and 7pm of about 8,000 adults – just 0.3%. 4% of the adult population claimed to have listened at some time “Yesterday” and a further 10% claimed to have listened at some time in the previous week.

Media Bureau blames the poor listening levels on low levels of advertising for the station launch, very few “big names” as presenters and no listenership tracking by Radio Ireland management. The agency believes however that if the station is prepared to spend enough on advertising and promotion then it will succeed in the future.
