RAJAR Releases New Podcast And Online Radio Survey

Rajar RAJAR has published its Podcasting and Radio Listening via the Internet Survey today, showing listening figures are up again.

The study reveals that 14.5 million people listen to the radio via the internet, up from 12 million in November last year and six million people have downloaded a podcast, up from 4.3 million.

It’s the second survey of its kind to be carried out by Ipsos MORI for RAJAR and is based on 863 online responses during April and May this year.

Christel Lacaze, research manager at RAJAR, said: “Now in its second instalment, this survey gives a unique insight into the behaviour of the online/offline audio community and the impact of new audio delivery formats on traditional live radio listening.”

The survey also found that 9.4 million people listen to the radio via the internet in an average week, either live or through a listen again service.

Half of listen again users said they now listen to radio programmers which they did not previously and three quarters said the service had no impact on how much live radio they listen to.

15% of podcast users said they listen to more live radio since the began downloading, while 39% say they also listen to new radio programmes.

iTunes remains the most popular software for podcast users, while comedy and music continue to be the two favourite genres of podcasts.

Although podcast listening occurs throughout the day, the study shows there is an evening peak when 44% of users press play.
