RAJAR Results Q1 2002- National Stations

A year on year comparison of RAJAR figures released for the first quarter of this year show that once again BBC Radio 2 dominated the national scene. Compared to Q1 2001 it saw an 18.7% increase in weekly reach to 12.9 million, while share was up 1.6 percentage points to 15.7%.

Of the commercial stations Classic FM did well, seeing a 12.9% increase in weekly reach which took it to 6.8 million and a modest increase in share, now at 4.6%. Kelvin MacKenzie’s talkSPORT also did well out of the system he has such criticism for, seeing an 8% year on year rise in reach, to 2.4 million.

With BBC Radio 3 and 5 Live seeing an 11% increase in reach to breach the 2 million mark and a 13.3% increase to top 6 million, respectively, it seems that only the popular music stations had a less than satisfactory quarter. Virgin saw reach for its national station drop 5.2% year on year to 2.5 million, while BBC Radio 1 saw only a 2% increase in reach. In terms of share, BBC Radio 1 saw a 0.7 percentage point fall to 8.4%, while Virgin saw a 0.2 percentage point drop to 1.3%.
