Reality Shows Hold Little Attraction For Over 25s
Channel 4’s Big Brother may have been the undisputed television phenomenon of the summer but for over 25 year olds it had little or no appeal, according to a recent survey from CIA MediaLab. While younger viewers were captivated by the voyeuristic gameshow, older age groups doubted its morals and worth.
Only 15% of all adults said they really enjoyed watching the show, compared to 52% of 15-24 year olds. This figure dropped sharply as the age group rose: only 17% of 25-34 year olds confessed to enjoying it.
On top of this, 39% of all adults said they couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about, compared to just 12% of 15-24 year olds. A total 45% of 15-24 year olds think the concept is a clever idea, compared to 16% of all adults, and it was the younger age group who were most interested in phoning in and helping decide the outcome of the show.
It was Channel 4 which was came out as the undisputed winner, delivering 47m 16-24 impacts during the Big Brother run and delivering to advertisers a lucrative hard-to-find youth audience.
