Regional ABCs – Paid-For Titles July – December 1997

There was very little year on year change among most paid-for regional titles for this period. Overall for July-December 1997 there were 8.883 million copies sold, up 0.21% on the previous year.

Among the top ten paid-for titles in the UK by circulation, the daily Manchester Evening News showed the biggest increase with a rise of 1% year on year to 173,191 while the Birmingham Evening Mail has the largest circulation at 192,188. The Leicester Mercury and Evening Herald (Dublin) showed the largest decreases among the top ten, with falls of 1.9% and 2.7% respectively.

Amongst the smaller regional newspapers the Surrey Herald Series went up 50.1% to 20,156 and the Merthyr Express Series saw a rise of 32.6% to 18,427. There were also large rises for the North Herts Gazette Series and the Sunday Tribune, where circulations rose 22.4% and 17% respectively.

At the other end of the scale there were large drops for the Tyrone Times, down 9.8% to 3,397 and the Gravesend Reporter, down 8.9% to 9,969.
