Regional Papers ‘Give Us Freedom’ Plea

Regional Papers ‘Give Us Freedom’ Plea

Five regional newspaper publishers have written to National Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley, calling for a level playing field in the media ownership rules to enable regional newspaper companies to compete fairly within local markets.

Chris Oakly, group chief executive of Midland Independent Newspapers, Freddy Johnston, chairman of Johnston Press, Robin Burgess, managing director of the CN Group in Cumbria, Philip Graf, chief executive of Trinity International Holdings and Sir Ray Tindle, chairman of Tindle Newspapers have signed the letter to Mrs Bottomley.

The letter follows a meeting earlier this month with Mrs Bottomley at the Newspaper Society. The letter objects to the “artificial restrictions” in the Government’s white paper on Media Ownership which would prevent regional and local newspapers from owning outright radio and television stations within their circulation areas. The letter asks the government to rethink this and other areas of regional cross media ownership.
