Regional Press Halts Circulation Decline
The latest set of regional ABC figures show that the market has redressed the general decline in circulation which has dogged the regional press for some time. Two thirds (63%) of regional titles have reported circulation growth, according to the Newspaper Society (NS).
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle and The Sunday Mercury (Birmingham) showed the biggest increases in circulation amongst the top ten, rising 1.65% and 1.64% respectively. The Birmingham Evening Mail maintains the highest total circulation at 195,391; the Manchester Evening News comes in at a close second with a total of 181,480.
The Glasgow Evening Times lost the largest percentage of circulation amongst the main players, falling 6.34%. The Dublin Evening Herald also lost 4.05% of its circulation.
The weeklies and the evenings are strengthening according to this set of figures, although evenings overall are still in a very slight decline. “It is heartening to see the regional evenings, which have endured a tough time on the sales front, turning the corner at last. The weeklies continue to go from strength to strength,” says NS commercial development manager, Mike Wright.
