Regional Press Warns On Over-Regulation
The Newspaper Society has warned the European Commission that over-regulation in the multimedia environment could prevent publishers from investing in electronic products and therefore stifle growth of the information society.
In response to the Commission’s green paper on Copyright and Related Rights in the Information Society, the NS argues that although copyright does need to be re-examined as a result of the shift from analogue to digital, the existing regimes and rights should wherever possible, be relied on, say the NS.
Mary Russell, solicitor and legal advisor at the Newspaper Society said, “The dilemna for print publishers is that, while they risk corporate decline if they do not invest and expand their print product to electronic ancillary products, they cannot be certain that their legal rights over the new products will allow them to recoup their investment.”
