Regional Variations Welcomed By ITC

Regional Variations Welcomed By ITC

The ITC has approved certain variations in the licenses of Carlton, LWT, Granada and Westcountry Television which concern regional programme requirements.

Carlton’s proposal involved a reduction of regional factual material (not including news and current affairs) from 1 hour 14 minutes to 35 minutes per week. Regional entertainment will increase from 37 minutes to 1 hour 16 minutes per week. The approval means the broadcasting of two editions of London Bridge each week in the early evening and a new 20 minute daily news programme will replace After 5. More regional issues will feature in the 10.40pm slot with a general increase in regional programmes during peak time.

LWT will reduce regional current affairs programmes from 1 hour 8 minutes to 47 minutes per week and will introduce a general factual slot for a minimum of 23 minutes per week.

Granada will reduce the minimum requirement for sport due to its loss of coverage rights for football and rugby with one hour 57 minutes reduced to 1 hour 21 minutes per week allowing more news and factual coverage to be broadcast.

Westcountry Television will reduce requirements for regional news from 7 hours 36 minutes to 7 hours 16 minutes and will increase regional factual information.

The ITC approved the changes as it believed the proposals ensured the quality and variety of the regional services were being maintained.
