The Newspaper Society has written to Chris Smith, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, to highlight the regional newspaper industry’s concerns over the rules governing cross-media ownership and newspaper mergers.
The Society believes that the current cross-media ownership regulations put a broadcasting company wishing to buy a newspaper at an unfair advantage over a newspaper company wishing to buy the same newspaper.
The Society also explained that it is in continuing discussions with the Radio Authority over how the body applies its public interest tests. The Society is concerned that the RA is applying “more onerous public interest criteria” than the ITC does when assessing ownership cases.
