Regionals Invest In Multimedia

In an attempt to safeguard the future for regional and local publishers, The Newspaper Society has launched an initiative to identify electronic and multi-media opportunities.

The Industry Strategy Opportunities Programme (ISOP) will bring together the Society’s ongoing research into new product development and new projects to identify market changes.

The Society is also continuing to press for a relaxation of Britain’s cross- media ownership rules, to ensure fair treatment for publishers. The Society has met the Radio Authority the Department of National Heritage and the Department of Trade and Industry in discussions to improve opportunities for local papers to own broadcasting outlets.

The Society says there is “an imbalance between broadcasters and publishers”, because a local radio station can own a newspaper within its area, but not vice-versa. This would prevent publishers having any meaningful role in the multi-media future, believes the society.
