Relaunch First Issue Review – Modern Review

The new Modern Review sets out to shock from the outset. The cover depicts a young girl in a union jack dress, with bulging eyes and a rope around her neck alongside the line: ‘Swinging London – The Myth of a British Renaissance.’ Other cover-lines include ‘Bye bye baby – Julie Birchill on her abortions’ and ‘Posh Spice – Like f**k she is’.
In addition to these cover-lines the handful of articles cover New Labour’s media paranoia, four stories about fashion and the Millennium Dome while there are also regular columns devoted to music reviews, more fashion, film and TV reviews and books.
Front Cover – Modern Review It is in the content and style of these articles however that Modern Review really stands out: always scathing of modern ways and whims, mostly funny and definitely controversial, the “mission” of the title appears to be to dissect, examine and expose today’s events, culture and lifestyle for what the Modern Review believes it to be.
Clearly targeting an intelligent and upmarket 25-34 year-old group the 92-page perfect-bound glossy is stylish and upmarket in appearance with minimalist layout and design on the pages. Advertisers include Volvo, Becks, Bacardi, Absolut Vodka, The Big Issue and Ford Explorer. The ad:ed ratio is 34:66.
