Research Reveals Growing Consumer Interest In Broadband

Consumer interest in broadband is increasing and around 700,000 homes plan to upgrade to a high-speed internet connection within the next twelve months, according to a report from Continental Research.

The report shows that of the 10 million UK homes currently connected to the internet, 1.2 million, or 12%, have some form of high-speed internet connection such as ADSL, ISDN or cable. The most popular form of connection was found to be ADSL and younger households, containing internet users aged between 15 and 34, showed the most interest in up-grading to this and other high-speed services.

Commenting on the report, Colin Shaddick, director at Continental Research, said: “Given that such a large proportion of homes are now connected to the internet via a PC there is a huge and ready market for broadband.”

According to Continental Research, there are now 17.9 million adults using the internet on a regular basis from home or from work, with each spending an average of £305 online in the last twelve months. It is estimated that a total of £5.5 billion was spent over the internet last year, with men accounting for 70% of all online spend.

Recent research from BMRB shows that NTL is the leading provider of broadband internet connections, supplying 41% of the total. Around 25% subscribe to Telewest and about 20% to BT. However, BT was the preferred supplier amongst those intending to switch to broadband (37%), followed by NTL (20%) and Telewest (9%) (see UK Broadband Uptake Continues To Rise).
