Restrictions On Tobacco Ads
The government has announced new restrictions on tobacco advertising at the same time as opposing a Labour bill to ban all forms of tobacco advertising. The new restrictions are part of a 5-year voluntary agreement between the government and tobacco manufacturers and mainly involve outdoor advertising.
The restrictions include a 40% reduction in poster advertising expenditure, a ban on small posters, such as at bus stops, and a ban on posters within a 200-metre radius of school entrances. Health warnings are to be increased in size to 20% of the total area of the advertisement, there is to be an end to the use of humour likely to appeal to children and a ban on advertising on computer games.
The Advertising Association which has been co-ordinating opposition to further restrictions said that it was relieved that a total ban did not go through but that it was disappointed at the new restrictions.
