Review : Daily Express Sport
The Daily Express Sport, launched today, is a new A3 sized colour daily supplement devoted to all major sporting events. Twenty-four pages long, its main sections include a round-up of the main news for each major sport, celebrity/journalist analysis, Diary, Results Service, Sports Talk and a TV/Radio Preview.
At a glance, “Sport” is a tidy and well presented pull-out, with the first issue focusing on a large picture of the Manchester United victory with the main story continuing on the centre pages. Alan Hansen gives a “Match of the Day”-style analysis of the weekends football, with a celebrity/journalist covering other sports on different days of the week. Each sports report is in-depth and is a statisticians delight as all the facts are summarised in neat little grey boxes. “Its Only A Game” Diary offers a more light-hearted sports round up and the Results Section is fairly standard. Sports Talk is another light-hearted section with views from the public and sports personalities alike, with England’s Mike Catt being today’s focus.
Daily Express Sport does what its title suggests and provides excellent coverage of sport. The design is basic but effective with neat black borders around articles and photographs. There were very few advertisements, and no full page display. The biggest was a half page on the back page, taken by Mazda.
