Review Of ITN Channel 3 Performance Published By ITC

The ITC today published its review of ITN as nominated provider of national and international news for the ITV Network. The review covers the first three years of the operation of the Channel Three licences which started in January 1993.

The review concluded that ITN has provided a well-resourced, authoritative and attractive news service, meeting the requirements of the Broadcasting Act 1990 for high quality. The review confirms the position of ITN as the Channel 3 news provider nominated by the ITC.

However it was not such good news for Carlton Communications and Granada group which each has a 36% share of ITN. Under the broadcasting Act, no shareholder is allowed to own more than 20% of a nominated news provider and therefore Carlton and Granada are required to reduce their holdings before the end of 1995.
