Review: Sport ’96 (The Guardian)
Today saw the release of The Guardians summer sport review; Sport ’96. The supplement will cover all of the summers outstanding sporting events such as Euro’96, Wimbledon, The Olympics and Cricket.
Sport ’96 will be published every Friday throughout the summer and features contributions from Sports Writer of the Year Richard Williams together with Guardian writers, Matthew Engel, Frank Keating, David Lacey and Mike Selvey.
Alan Rusbridge, Editor of The Guardian Stated:
“The Guardian pioneered a sports section two years ago. Now as the summer of sport in 1996 gets into its stride we are bringing back the concept – this time expanded to a 24-page pull-out section. Sport’96 will be a more features led and creative look at this fantastic summer of sport which should appeal to the sports fans and non sports fans alike.”
The first edition has a large picture of a smiling Terry Venables with the headline “Auf Wiedersehen, Tel” in reference to the England manager’s last match in charge of his country. Page 2 has a small column of the contents so the reader can go straight to the sport that they are interested in and from then on we are “treated” to three double pages of the post-mortem for the epic England Vs Germany Euro’96 semi-final. There are also articles on Wimbledon, Baseball, Tour De France, Racing, Cricket and The Olympics. A particularly interesting article features various sporting agonies with regard to Gareth Southgate’s penalty miss. The back pages has sporting round-ups including a guide to the best bets of the week by Fantasy Football League’s “Stato” (Angus Loughran), Spot The ball and a Hall of Infamy.
Twenty-four pages long, there are a few small ads, all of which are sport oriented, and no full page ads. The coverage of sport is more or less standard with the usual results service, but what makes Sport’96 different is the interesting and well written articles with general sporting facts from the past. The one negative point is being only limited to the summer.
