Revised Cable Stats Show 4.5m Homes Connected
The Independent Television Commission (ITC) has revised and amended its quarterly cable statistics following consultation with the cable companies. Data for the final quarter of 2000 is now available and shows 4.5m homes in the UK are now connected to a cable service.
This represents a year on year increase of 6.2%. Total cable penetration now stands at 35.8% of homes passed and marketed, a 1.3% point increase since last year.
Cable television uptake rose by 9.8% during 2001 with subscribers passing the 3.5m mark. Around 900,000 of these homes receive a digital service. Penetration rose by 1.9% points during the year; 28.1% of all homes are now passed and marketed for the service.
Cable TV’s share of the digital pay-tv market now stands at 13.7%, a rise of 10.6% points during 2001. Its share of the total pay-TV market slipped slightly, however, and now stands at 37.5%, a drop of 5 percentage points. ONdigital, the digital terrestrial TV platform, achieved the strongest growth rate during the year, up 83.3%, while satellite TV grew by 28.2%.
