Roger Holland Leaves Newspaper Society

Roger Holland, head of marketing at the Newspaper Society, is to leave the Society at the end of April. This follows criticism of PressAd, the commercial arm of the NS. A six-month marketing review was carried out which tabled improvements in the marketing and promotion of the regional press, in an attempt to build national advertising.

Charles Brims, who led the marketing review, said, “The regional press is the second biggest advertising medium in the UK and yet our national advertising share has fallen.”

The review came up with the following recommendations:

  • PressAd should be strengthened to stabilise the regional press share of national display advertising.
  • PressAd should consider setting up an operation to sell letterbox marketing services on behalf of its members.
  • PressAd should strongly promote and develop co-operative advertising for its members
  • The Society’s marketing functions should be merged into a strengthened PressAd, reporting to a new marketing committee.

Roger Holland, who has been in charge of PressAd since November when Tony Steward left suddenly, will remain in charge of the Society’s marketing department until the end of April. He will however, remain a director of JICREG and chairman of JICPOPS.
