Rover Gets A Telling Off
The ITC has published its May report into TV advertising complaints. The Rover 600 advertisement was found to be insensitive. The ad features a prisoner exchange in a mountainous region. Viewers had objected to the similarities of the ad’s story-line with ongoing hostage situations, particularly that of two Britons in Kashmir. The ITC upheld the complaints and urged advertisers not to underestimate the potential for causing offence when images and themes reminiscent of real life tragedies are used in ads.
In two separate cases, actors were found to appear in adverts shown in breaks in TV shows that they were also featuring in, this is contrary to the ITC Code. Channel 4 and Carlton Sales have both apologised for the errors.
