Roy of the Rovers returns

Roy Of The Rovers Children’s book and magazine publisher Egmont is set to release a collection of classic Roy of the Rovers comic strips next week.

The 64-page Roy of the Rovers special collector’s edition will go on sale next Wednesday – the first in the four part collection of classic comic strips to be released by the publisher, according to reports.

Egmont will also publish special editions of Major Eazy, Buster and Misty later in the year, all of which will be sold exclusively in WH Smith stores.

Roy of the Rovers magazine was launched in 1976 after the fictional football star Roy Race became an idol to young comic readers in Tiger magazine in 1954.

The popular title switched from a weekly to a monthly format in 1993, when the magazine’s focus changed to his son, Rocky.

However, the monthly edition failed to please readers and the magazine closed in 1995, after just 19 editions in its new format.

The Roy of the Rovers special edition is set to include footballing stories that featured in the original magazine – Billy’s Boots, which follows the schoolboy Billy Dane and Hard Man, which follows Jonny “Hard Man” Dexter.
