Royal Wedding Coverage Attracts 14m Viewers

Television coverage of the marriage of Prince Edward to Sophie Rhys-Jones was watched by a total of 13.9 million people, according to unofficial overnight figures. A total of 8.6 million watched Saturday’s Royal Wedding on BBC 1, whilst 5.3 million tuned in to ITV’s coverage.

In terms of share of viewing, the BBC took 47% and ITV 29%. This is a relatively small audience for a Royal Wedding: in 1981 the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales drew 28.4 million viewers.
