Culture Secretary Chris Smith has appointed Elan Closs Stephens as the new chairman of S4C.
Her appointment will run for four years from 1 April 1998, when she takes over from Ifan Prys Edwards, the present chairman. Stephens is a senior lecturer at the University of Wales and is director of the Thomson Foundation Monitoring and Research Group on issues of broadcasting compliance.
