While OTT and streaming services grabbed more media attention in 2012, Blu-ray and DVDs sales accounted for 61% of US home video spending on films throughout the year.
Despite the introduction and mass uptake of digital rental options physical discs remain the largest source of revenue for the film industry. Subscription video on demand services such as Netflix were excluded from the research.
The findings, which come from NPD’s lastest VideoWatch report, attributed the decline in part to lower average prices paid for Blu-ray titles, which fell 7% to $19.97 per unit last year.
Meanwhile, digital distribution of movies continues to grow, making up 16% of consumer spending in 2012 (a 2% increase from 2011).
