Salmon Appointed BBC Director Of Sport
![]()
Peter Salmon, controller of BBC 1, is to step down from his current job and take on the role of director of sport. The role is newly created and will see Salmon become a member of the BBC’s executive committee.
The BBC’s flagship channel was criticised in the governors’ annual report earlier this year (see BBC Criticised By Governors In Annual Report), and in the weeks surrounding August’s Edinburgh Television festival, rumours that Salmon was on the way out grew.
While the job he is leaving is generally thought of as tough, when Salmon takes up his new position in November he will be facing up to several years of heavy losses in BBC Sports coverage rights.
