Samsung to scrap plasma TVs

Samsung has announced that it will be discontinuing the sale of plasma televisions at the end of 2014, and instead focusing on ultra-HD and curved TV models.

According to reports, the South Korean firm said the reason for shutting down its plasma panel production business was a result of the decline in overall demand for plasma display panel TVs.

“We plan to continue our PDP TV business until the end of this year, due to market demands,” Samsung told CNET. “We remain committed to providing consumers with products that meet their needs, and will increase our focus on growth opportunities in UHD TVs and curved TVs.”

At this year’s CES, Guy Kinnell, head of TV and AV for Samsung UK and Ireland, said that this year Samsung will drive industry growth through “tremendous innovation in UHD picture quality, breakthrough design and consumer choice” and that it is “well-positioned to meet UHD demand”.

According to NPD, curved TV shipments will reach almost 800,000 this year and six million by the end of 2017.

LG is expected to follow suit soon.
